Music at Wootton Lower School

Music at Wootton Lower School intends to inspire, motivate and help pupils develop a love of music. Through our music curriculum pupils will gain self-confidence, enjoyment, a sense of achievement and develop their capacity to express ideas and feelings to their peers and teachers. It is a way of connecting and bringing communities together through the shared endeavour of singing, playing instruments together as a group and through the love of listening to one another perform. We provide opportunities for our pupils to build their creativity and develop skills through creating, playing, performing and enjoying music. For the last year, we have also welcomed ‘Totally Rad’ to both sites. This is a company that come into school and can provide your child with 1:1 or group instrumental lessons. At Wootton Lower School we deliver a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum through Charanga. Charanga is a scheme of work which offers a topic-based approach to support children’s learning in music. Through the musical program Charanga, teachers are able to deliver inclusive lessons for all children to access the musical curriculum in a fun and engaging way, further promoting a love of learning. Charanga lessons are planned in sequences to provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen and apply their understanding. In the classroom children play a variety of tuned and un-tuned instruments. Playing various instruments enables children to broaden their knowledge on how instruments are played, what they are made of and how they can change the way the instrument sounds. Further up the school, children are able to create notes, as well as how to read basic music notation. They also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music.

EYFS and Year 1 have also been using resources from BBC Bring the noise. The scheme alongside Charanga helps again to promote a love of learning music. EYFS in particular, looks at what music is, how music is made and how to create music. Bring the noise provides and variety of song choices which the children learn the lyrics to and have been learning or creating their actions to the music which they then perform to their class. It provides practical and engaging lessons which the children thoroughly enjoy taking part in.
